I remember late one night in 1982, a graduate student tired of studying, switching on the TV and there were the Tonys. Alone and bored (my girlfriend had gone to sleep), I stopped to watch a bit. I had never heard of Dreamgirls or Jennifer Holliday. The performance stunned me. It was one of those moments, where something comes out of the blue, and you realize you're witnessing something truly remarkable. At the end, I realized tears were rolling down my cheeks.
For 24 years after that I wanted to hear it again, re-experience a bit of that moment. I bought the album some years back, and while good, the performance lacked the raw emotion and wild abandon of this one, not to mention the absence of video. When the internet first kicked up and people said you could find anything on it, I started searching for it, but to no avail.
When Napster and then later peer-to-peer file sharing emerged, I looked there, sometimes searching hundreds of times a year; never finding it. Then a few weeks ago someone sent me a link to a YouTube video -- some lame ass thing with bottle rockets -- and I searched again. And there it was. I've watched it four or five times since then.
And although I'm not 22 anymore, and Reagan isn't president (thank god) and HIV as been with us for 20 years and the planet seems so much more crowded and imperiled, and life has been so hardened, this performance seems an amazing reaffirmation of love and loss, and the power relationships have in all our lives. For me, it is nothing less than an important part of music history.

His name is Pete. A 79 year old widow, who lives alone in his native England, he listens to Blues, loves motorcycles and a little over a week ago, he uploaded his first video on YouTube, titled "First Try".
With his soft voice, kind manners, simplicity and above all, being an octogenarian that finally proved that you don't have to be young to dominate and understand today's technology, he managed to get his video showcased on YouTube's front page and the responses have been overwhelming.
"First Try" already has over a million hits, more than 8,000 comments, over 200 video responses, more than 11,000 have rated it and more than 2,700 comments have been left in his profile. 16,000 plus users have subscribed to his videos, making him the #1 Most Subscribed All Time. These numbers might not be accurate by the time I'm done writing this, because they are growing exponentially.
Keep in mind that YouTube recieves 20 million unique visits per month and that a 100 million clips are watched daily, according to Nielsen/NetRatings, and that should give you an idea of the magnitude of this event, and lets not forget that just 10 days ago, this gentelman didn't even exist in YouTube.
Amongst the most moving responses, we have Renetto's, a YouTube user with "director" status, given that Peter answered one of Renetto's videos with a video response of his own. Renetto, in his video, was asking YouTubers, "Who are you?....Who, Who...Who, Who?".
Peter, that goes by the pseudonym of geriatric1927, has been all over the globe in the las few days in various newspapers, for example: Taiwan, Noruega, Nueva Zelanda, EEUU1, EEUU2, Australia, Londons Channel 4 and so on.
Without a doubt, we're witnessing one of the most revolutionary inventions in the internet world since Napster, and who knows, maybe one of the greatest inventions of all time.
Definitely, I think it's time well spent to dedicate a few minutes to watch Peter's videos, to be part of a peculiar, enriching and endearing story. We're talking about a phenomena, that was just impossible to imagine a little over two years ago.

Con su tono de voz calmado, su apariencia gentil, su sencillez y sobretodo, el ser un octogenario que finalmente demostro que no hay que ser joven para dominar la tecnologia de hoy dia, logro que su video fuera puesto en el portal de la pagina y las respuestas han sido abrumadoras.
El video "First Try" ya cuenta con mas de 470,000 visitas, mas de 6,700 respuestas en posts, 200 respuestas en video y mas de 1,400 comentarios dejados en su perfil. A sus 7 videos se han suscrito mas de 9,000 usuarios, convirtiendolo en el #7 de todos los tiempos y esta entre los 25 canales mas vistos este mes. Estos numeros podran no ser reales para cuando termine de escribir este post, ya que los mismos, van subiendo exponencialmente.
Tomemos en cuenta que YouTube recibe 20 millones de visitantes unicos por mes y que se ven mas de 100 millones de videos diariamente, segun datos ofrecidos por Nielsen/NetRatings, y asi tenemos una idea de la magnitud de este suceso, y no podemos olvidar que hace tan solo una semana, este señor no existia en YouTube.
Entre las respuestas mas conmovedoras, se encuentra la de Renetto, un usuario de YouTube, con categoria de "director", dado que Peter; respondio a Renetto con un video propio a un corto en el que Renetto preguntaba, "¿Quiénes son los que postean videos en YouTube? ¿Quiénes? ¿Quiénes?"
Este señor, que lleva el pseudónimo de geriatric1927, ha sido mencionado por todo el globo en periodicos de distintos paises, como por ejemplo: Taiwan, Noruega, Nueva Zelanda, EEUU1, EEUU2, Australia, las noticias del Canal 4 Londinense y asi sigue la lista.
Estamos sin duda, siendo testigos de uno de los inventos mas revolucionarios en el mundo del Internet desde Napster, y quien sabe, si es uno de los grandes inventos de todos los tiempos.
Definitivamente, creo que es tiempo bien empleado, dedicarle unos minutos a los sus videos, para que sean parte de una historia muy peculiar y a la vez muy enriquecedora. Hablamos de un fenomeno imposible de imaginar, tan solo 2 años atras.

In my own opinion, I don't see the scenario that the U.S. has panned out in any forseable future, which is to establish a temporary goverment, with the transition towards a democracy, all this courtesy of yours truly, the U.S. goverment.
I'm not a Castro supporter, but neither am I of the U.S. fast-growing foreign policy, that resembles more and more as the years go by, to that doctrine of James Monroe.
As a matter of fact, I'm going out on a limb, and assuming that if there was no embargo (another pleasantry courtesy of the U.S), the Cubans might even be gratefull that communism and Fidel existed, and I'm not even sure that the latter is needed, given that almost 3 generations have been born under the "Revolucion", and do not know or understand anything else.
But what I really don't understand is, what has been scaring the U.S. government for the last 50 years or so about communism? The Cold War is over, Russia is now an ally, China has a Free Trade agreement with the U.S., so please don't tell me that this little country from the caribbean third world, proposes a threat to U.S. aspirations for world dominance.
If and when Fidel decides to give up power, or dies abruptly, it is very clear that Raul is taking over, which only means that the continuity of the Communist Party and the "Revolucion" will carry on with him.

Fidel Castro se sometio a cirugia intestinal causada por el stress y ha entregado temporalmente la Presidencia, el poder de las Fuerzas Armadas y el Partido Comunista a su hermano menor Raul Castro, de 75 años, 4 menos que Fidel.
Lo que me lleva a una sola conclusion, y es que no importa cuando caiga Fidel, no creo que sea posible lo que desea el gobierno norteamericano, y es instaurar una democracia bajo una transicion amenizada precisamente por los mismos norteamericanos (salir de una dictadura comunista para entrar a una esclavitud imperialista-capitalista, solo Dios sabe que seria peor).
No soy un defensor de Castro ni mucho menos simpatizante, pero tampoco lo soy de la creciente Politica Exterior de los E.E.U.U., que cada dia mas se asemeja a la Doctrina Monroe, "America para los Americanos".
Es mas, me voy un poco mas lejos y me atrevo a asumir que si en primer lugar, no existiera el embargo (otro pequeño detalle cortesia de los norteamericanos) a lo mejor los cubanos estarian agradecidos de que existen el comunismo y Fidel, aunque no creo que lo segudno sea necesario, ya que 3 generaciones han nacido y vivido bajo el reginel de la Revolucion, desconociendo y no siendo capaces de entender otro modelo de gobierno o sociedad.
Pero lo que realmente no entiendo, es ese miedo que tienen los norteamericanos por el comunismo. La Guerra Fria ya termino, Rusia ahora es un aliado y tienen un Tratado de Libre Comercio con China, asi que por favor no me digan que un pais del caribe tercermundista, representa un amenaza para los deseos de dominacion mundial de los Estados Unidos.
Lean ustedes mismos la historia completa, desarrollandose en el justo momento que escribo este post, y saque usted sus propias conclusiones.
